CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On January 20, the Chongqing Municipal Public Security Bureau’s Public Security Division revealed the most popular baby names for 2024. Among the most frequently used characters for names were Chen (辰), Ze (泽), Yue (玥), Xi (汐), Yao (瑶), Yan (妍), Yi (一), Ran (然), Han (涵), and Yan (言). Regarding girls’ names, the top choices were Yue, Xi, and Yao, while boys’ names most often featured Ze, Chen, and Yu.

According to statistics, the ten most popular names for baby girls in 2024 were Xiyue, Shihan, Muyan, Muyao, Xinyue, Xiyao, Yuhan, Yike, Yuxi, and Yiyi (汐玥、诗涵、沐妍、沐瑶、昕玥、汐瑶、钰涵、亦可、语汐、伊一). Notably, Yiyi ranked 6th in 2023, while Yike was 10th that year. The most frequently used characters for girls’ names were Yue, Xi, and Yao, with Yue and Xi ranking second and third, respectively, in 2023.

As for boys, the top ten names were Ruize, Xingchen, Jingze, Muchen, Yichen, Haoran, Haoyu, Muyang, Yichen, and Jincheng (瑞泽、星辰、璟泽、沐辰、奕辰、浩然、浩宇、沐阳、亦辰、锦程). Aside from Ruize, Jingze, Muchen, and Muyang, the other six names also appeared on the 2023 list of top baby names, reflecting their enduring popularity. The most popular characters for boys in 2024 remain Ze, Chen, and Yu, just like in 2023.

A representative from the Public Security Division explained that the character Chen, associated with the Chinese zodiac animal “loong”, has long been a favorite among parents when choosing names for their newborns. Chen was the second most popular character for baby names in 2023. Since 2024 is the Year of the Loong (Jia-Chen, a combination of Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch in the Chinese calendar), it’s no surprise that Chen took the lead in 2024, with 5,064 babies named using this character. Additionally, Long (龙), which means “loong”, was used in the names of 269 babies. Interestingly, there are currently nine people in Chongqing with the character She (蛇), meaning “snake”, in their names, and 56 with the character Si (巳), the Chinese zodiac sign for the snake.
