CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On November 28, the 12th meeting of the Standing Committee of the 6th Chongqing Municipal People’s Congress voted to approve of Chongqing's establishing sister city ties with Annaba Province of Algeria, which will bring the total number of friendship cities for Chongqing to 57.

Algeria, located in the northwest of Africa, covers an area of 2.38 million square kilometers, making it the largest country in Africa, with a population of approximately 45.6 million and ranking fourth in economic scale in Africa. China enjoys a deep traditional friendship with Algeria. After the establishment of Algeria’s provisional government in September 1958, China was the first non-Arab country to recognize Algeria, and established diplomatic relations with this country in December of that year. In February 2014, China and Algeria established a comprehensive strategic partnership. In November 2023, Chongqing and Annaba Province jointly signed a letter of intent to establish a friendship city relationship.

Annaba Province, located at the easternmost tip of Algeria, along the Mediterranean coast, founded in the 11th century BC, with a population of around 1 million, is the third-largest coastal city in Algeria. Annaba Province is an important industrial region of Algeria, with industries including steel, mining, food processing, metalworking, wood and its derivatives, construction and tourism.
