CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- According to a recent announcement from Chongqing Municipal Education Commission, 78 disciplines of 12 local universities have ranked top 1% worldwide according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), as per the latest ESI data released by the globally renowned academic evaluation agency Clarivate in September.
Notably, 6 disciplines have ranked within the top 0.1% worldwide, namely Chemistry and Materials Science of Chongqing University, Agricultural Science and Chemistry of Southwest University, Clinical Medicine of Chongqing Medical University, and Clinical Medicine of Army Medical University. Additionally, Engineering of Chongqing University ranks top 0.01% worldwide.

The ESI database is a key analytical tool used to evaluate scientific research quality and track scientific development trends, serving as an important benchmark for assessing the academic standards and global impact of universities, research institutions, and countries or regions worldwide.
In recent years, Chongqing has continuously optimized its development system of the “Double First-lass University Plan”, implementing specialized initiatives to build world-class disciplines and actively exploring interdisciplinary integration. It has also launched the “Artificial Intelligence + Disciplinary Clusters” initiative to further enhance the quality and efficiency of discipline development. Every year, it has steadily increased the number of disciplines in the top 1% of the ESI world rankings, with the number of disciplines in the top 1‰ also showing stable growth. According to relevant person in charge, by 2027, Chongqing aims to add 2-3 doctoral degree-granting institutions, establish over 5 world-leading disciplines, more than 7 world-class disciplines, and over 60 high-level disciplines globally.
