CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On September 28, Chongqing Zoo hosted a special event to introduce the newest member of its panda family – the three-month-old cub of giant panda Haoqi. Panda enthusiasts and visitors from across the country gathered at the Panda House to witness the adorable panda cub and its mother up close.

In late February 2024, Haoqi successfully mated at the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda. On June 28, at 7:30 p.m., she gave birth to a healthy cub, which was initially judged to be female, with a newborn weight of 185g. It’s Haoqi’s second time as a mother; she previously gave birth to fraternal twins, Qizhen and Qibao, in 2021.

Since the birth, Haoqi has been caring for her baby with minimal human intervention, except for occasional help from the zookeepers. Now, the cub has grown significantly, weighing 5,805 grams. According to the keeper, the cub loves staying close to her mother and often calls for her when Haoqi steps away to take food.

"'Haoqi' was named by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Ding Zhaozhong during a visit to Chongqing Zoo," a lady in the crowd explained to a young child beside her, sharing the story behind the giant panda's name.

"The panda cub has a fiery personality, sometimes even roaring at its mother," said a representative from Chongqing Zoo. The cub, affectionately known as "Haoqi's Baby," has now opened its eyes and is learning to crawl. In the future, it will be exhibited occasionally based on its condition and the weather. Visitors are welcome to catch a glimpse of this adorable cub during the National Day holiday.

In addition, Chongqing Zoo has planned a series of celebratory activities for the National Day holiday. These include science-themed events focused on National Day and World Animal Day, the special "Celebrating National Day with Animals" event on October 1, and the grand openings of the CQ Zoo Market and Dundun Tea Shop at the Red Panda House.

On October 1 (National Day) and October 4 (World Animal Day), visitors can also enjoy the "I'm with the Animals" face-painting event at Waterfowl Lake Square. Volunteers from local vocational schools will offer free animal-themed face painting, allowing visitors to blend in with nature alongside the animals.
