Role models: Encouraged to keep serving the people more effectively

Chongqing is home to four remarkable individuals named "Models of the Times": Ma Shanxiang, Mao Xianglin, Yang Xuefeng, and Wang Hongxu. These figures have achieved greatness through their ordinary yet profound actions, each a beacon of inspiration.

“Getting on this ‘advanced’ train feels like a new beginning for me, a way to keep pace with the times,” shared Ma Shanxiang.

With over 30 years of experience in mediating community disputes and conducting ideological work, Ma Shanxiang has filled more than 270 notebooks with over nine million words. His dedication has led to the resolution over 2,500 conflicts, and his "Lao Ma's Working Methods" have become a model for maintaining harmony and stability in his community.

For Ma, the theme train symbolizes rapid progress. “Riding this fast train encourages me to keep improving and serving the people more effectively,” he said. He also emphasized staying grounded: “I’ll remain humble, keep learning, and continue to serve as a role model for others.”

He believes that as the train speeds through Chongqing, it will carry the spirit of these role models into thousands of homes, inspiring citizens to follow, and even surpass, the examples set by these role models.

Mao Xianglin’s achievements are etched into the cliffs themselves. After leading his fellow villagers in constructing an 8-kilometer road along a cliff face over seven years, Mao continued to guide them toward prosperity by developing a "three-color" economy.

As he rode the train, Mao expressed his hopes: “The train, carrying the spirit of Xiazhuang Village, will help more people learn about our village and inspire me to keep doing practical work for the people - developing tourism and other industries, and helping villagers increase their income.”

Mao also shared brochures showcasing Xiazhuang’s journey toward rural revitalization, inviting passengers to visit and witness firsthand the village’s transformation.

Passengers: Draw strength from role models

As the train glided through the mountainous landscape of Chongqing, it wasn’t just a journey through the city - it was a journey of inspiration.

“Ma’s 24-character rule for himself”, “Do your own work, strive for your own happiness”... The stories of "Models of the Times" spread positive energy among passengers, many of whom scanned QR codes to learn more about these remarkable individuals.

"Teacher Wang gave us his 'final lesson' with his life," reflected Chen, a post-90s passenger, after reading about the story of Wang Hongxu. “I want to start helping those in need, beginning with the people around me.”

For Mr. Yang and his child, the theme train was an unexpected yet meaningful encounter. “I never imagined we’d find a train like this. It’s a great way for my child to learn about these role models and feel their influence. It’s very impactful.”

Tourist Miss Luo, visiting Chongqing, echoed this sentiment: “Reading about the deeds of these 'Models of the Times' moved me deeply. They are role models for each of us.” She praised Chongqing’s innovative approach to allow passengers to embark on an "immersive" experience, paying tribute to these role models.

The "Model of the Times" theme train runs along CRL Line 2, passing through major commercial districts such as Jiefangbei, and attracting an average daily ridership of 350,000 passengers. Packed with the spirit of serving people and positive energy, the train shares these role models’ stories in vivid detail, promoting a culture of learning from virtuous individuals and encouraging people to strive to be the "Most Beautiful Chongqing Citizens." Ultimately, the train aims to inspire a love for New Chongqing and motivate citizens to take an active role in building the future of this vibrant city. (Translated by Yuki, Fathom Language Limited)
